In April 2024, on a significant day for honouring the history and contributions of women, we, the leaders of Jiayuan Charity, had the privilege to attend the 63rd Annual Pioneer Women’s Ceremony. The event celebrated the resilience and achievements of the women who helped shape our community, and it was an honour for us to play a part in such a meaningful occasion.

Our junior leader, Chloe Siah, captured the essence of this special day in a video, where she shares her personal reflections on the ceremony and the significance of the event. You can watch Chloe’s video below:

The ceremony was held at the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden in Kings Domain, which was established in 1933 by the Victorian Government to celebrate Melbourne’s Centenary and empower women. The garden stands today as a tribute to the strength and courage of pioneer women.

The day began with a gathering where attendees signed in, and it was inspiring to see our senior leaders in action, including Victoria, the sole founder and chief planner of Jiayuan Charity, along with charity planners Phoebe and Sarah, and another junior leader Patrick, who coordinated the group for our singing performance of the Australian National Anthem. Singing at such an important event was a proud moment for all of us.

During the event, Vice-President Guosheng Chen shared Jiayuan Charity’s 2023 theme, ‘Children Help Children’, highlighting our journey to becoming the first charity led by children in Victoria. It was a moment of pride for our organisation, showcasing the strength and commitment of our youth leaders in making a positive impact on the community.

A particularly moving part of the day was hearing from Kathy Watt, the first Australian woman to win Olympic gold in cycling in 1992. Her story of determination and perseverance touched everyone in attendance. Despite the lack of support for female athletes at the time, Kathy’s achievements remind us of the ongoing fight for gender equality and the incredible impact that pioneers like her have made in sports and beyond.

We are truly honoured to have been part of the Pioneer Women’s Ceremony, a day that celebrates not only the legacy of past pioneers but also the continuing efforts toward gender equality and empowerment.
